Mandela was sentenced a life long imprisonment in 1964 for bringing out the campaigns to overthrow the apartheid regime in South Africa. He was incarcerated for 18 years on Robben Island where he received the lowest of all treatments than other prison workers. However, he was able to earn a Bachelor Degree in Law from the University of London correspondence program in jail. His strong determination to outcast such rule from the country inspired several international campaigns for his release which made him a great political leader in the global community. He also gave a historical speech in his trial that expressed his dedication for the nation and the freedom of people. He also wrote a biography which he named ‘Long Walk to Freedom’.
